Vitruvian Man, Leonardo Da Vinci

The Vitruvian Man was created by Leonardo da Vinci around 1487. It is accompanied by notes based on the work of the famous architect Vitruvius Pollio. The drawing, made with pen and ink on paper, depicts a male figure in two overlapping positions, with arms and legs apart, drawn both in a circle and a square simultaneously. The drawing and text are sometimes referred to as the Law of Proportions, or less frequently, the Human Proportions.

Leonardo da Vinci uses the image to demonstrate the different proportions of the human body by placing the man within a circle and a square. By using the drawing, he teaches us the importance of the proportions of the human body, bringing together art and mathematics.

The proportional relationship of the parts reflects universal design. And the "medical" balance of elements provides a stable structure. Therefore, these qualities are shared equally between creation and man's own sturdy construction. By the late 1480s, this theme of the artistic microcosm idea emerged as one of the great unifying principles. He believed that the functioning of the human body was a cosmography, likening it to the functioning of the universe.
