Titian, Rape Of Europa
The Rape of Europa is a painting approximately painted by Venetian artist Titian around 1560-62. It is part of the permanent collection of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, Massachusetts. The painting is oil on canvas, measuring 178 x 205 centimeters (70 inches × 81 inches).
Titian's depiction of The Rape of Europa (1559-1562), taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses, was a radical departure from classical, medieval, and Renaissance interpretations of the myth. Europa's strange and overly sexualized posture on the back of the bull god was a wild departure from pictorial traditions and was an iconographic anomaly within the visual tradition. There's a sea monster in the foreground, Europa's legs are slightly spread, and the expression on her face is one of sheer terror. However, the term "rape" is not a reference to a vile act of sexual violence, but merely means "abduction".
Painted in Venice in the 1560s, Titian's Rape of Europa was inspired by a story from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Jupiter, the king of the gods who fell in love with Europa, transforms himself into a beautiful white bull and joins a herd grazing by the seaside. Europa, nearby with her companions, approaches the beautiful creature and extends her hand. Finding it tame, she plays with the bull in the meadow, and its horns fill with flowers. When she playfully climbs onto its back, the mischievous god takes the opportunity and leaps into the sea, kidnapping his object of affection as she clings to him in fear.
Jupiter crosses the ocean, and Europa clings to his single horn. Looking over her shoulder towards the shore, she waves a red silk veil to draw attention. Europa's companions respond with their own frantic signals. Titian, by positioning a menacing, scaly sea monster filled with spikes in the foreground, dramatizes the danger of drowning. Nearby, a god of love chases after Europa on top of a dolphin. His pose mirrors hers, perhaps mocking her situation.
We can see the moment when Jupiter takes Europa across the sea to Crete, an island of Greece. The story ends quite well as she becomes the first Queen of Crete and the couple have three children together.
