Titian, Bacchus And Ariadne

'Titian, Bacchus and Ariadne' is one of several paintings commissioned by the Duke of Ferrara for the Alabaster Room in the Duke's Palace.

The story of Bacchus and Ariadne begins with Princess Ariadne, the daughter of King Minos of Crete, helping Athenian hero Theseus to kill the Minotaur living in the center of the labyrinth. Ariadne gives Theseus a ball of thread, upon which Theseus ties one end of the thread to the door of the labyrinth and unravels it as he enters. He finds the beast Minotaur and kills it in the ensuing fight. After escaping from the labyrinth using Ariadne's thread, he sets off to return to Athens, taking Ariadne with him. The ship stops at the island of Naxos, where Ariadne falls asleep and is abandoned by Theseus. In the painting, Ariadne is wandering helplessly on the shores of Naxos, searching in vain for her lost lover Theseus, surprised by Bacchus and his noisy and drunk environment. The wine god Bacchus falls in love with Ariadne and offers his marriage with a promise of a crown from the stars as a wedding gift. In another version of the story, he offers her the Sky as a wedding gift, which will later become the constellation of the Northern Crown (Corona Borealis).

The painting is clearly divided into two sections by a diagonal line from the bottom left to the top right. On the left, Ariadne is walking on the shore with a wide sea, sky, and open landscapes in front of her. The right part is occupied by a noisy drunken bacchant and satyr procession walking in a darker and more intense landscape representing the wild and animal side of life. In the middle of the composition, Bacchus, leaping towards Ariadne from his chariot, forms the most important element connecting the two worlds.

The figures in the painting also deserve a closer look. First and foremost, it depicts Ariadne in between two phases of her life, still mourning the loss of her lover and being surprised by her future husband. Even though Bacchus in the middle of the composition is more noticeable, he is the most refined and beautiful figure. Ariadne barely notices Bacchus leaping, her heart still occupied with Theseus and his deception. Titian portrays Ariadne at the decisive moment that separates her past and future.

Titian was a recognized master of colors, and Bacchus and Ariadne is a shining example of his talents. The left part of the composition is painted with cold colors dominated by the blue of the sky and the distant landscapes and Ariadne's blue robe. Dark green and warm earthy brown tones on the right emphasize the wild and naturalist side of the composition. However, Titian enhances the color harmony in this simple color distribution by using color contrasts in both parts of the painting.
