The Torment Of Saint Anthony, Michelangelo
This is the first known painting described by Michelangelo's earliest biographers and is believed to have been painted when he was twelve or thirteen years old. Even though Michelangelo considered himself a sculptor first and foremost, he received his initial training as a painter in the workshop of one of Florence's leading masters, Domenico Ghirlandaio (c. 1449-1494). Giorgio Vasari and Ascanio Condivi, who wrote the first biographies of Michelangelo, say that his first work, besides some drawings, was a painted copy of the fifteenth-century German master Martin Schongauer's engraving The Temptation of Saint Anthony. This rare subject is based on the life of the Great Saint Anthony, written by Athanasius of Alexandria in the fourth century, which tells of the Egyptian hermit-saint being lifted into the air and attacked by demons.
When associated informally with Ghirlandaio's workshop and created under the guidance of artist Francesco Granacci, an old friend, Michelangelo's painting gained him wide recognition. Vasari and Condivi, who were writing while Michelangelo was still alive, recounted that he had examined the colorful scales and other parts of specimens taken from the fish market to give realism to the demonic creatures. Michelangelo skillfully revised Schongauer's composition to make it more compact and gave the monsters more animal-like features, notably adding fish scales to one of them. He also included a landscape resembling the Arno River Valley around Florence. The work is one of four panel paintings generally accepted to be by his hand and is the first painting by Michelangelo to enter an American collection.
