THE ANCIENT NAME OF AMASRA ... SESAMOS....
Amasra is one of the most beautiful places in Turkey. It stretches from the Western Black Sea, from Bartın to the sea, and is home to an eye-catching landscape with many islands connected to the mainland and independent. Of course, it is one of the places worth seeing with its 3000 years of history and the civilizations it has hosted over the years, charm, fishing, local arts and forested areas surrounding it. It is known that Amasra, whose first name was Sesamos, was one of the port cities of the region called Paphlagonia in ancient times.
It is said that the Persian princess Amastris, who lived in the 2nd century BC, spent her life in political marriages and deaths due to this. During the Persian invasion, which Alexander the Great was putting to an end in those years, when Alexander became the winner, he married his general, Craterus, to Amastris, but after a short time Craterus ended the marriage. Amastris marries and has two children from these marriages. Meanwhile, Amastris, who liked Amasra, whose name was known as Sesamos, gave the city his own name and had the city rebuilt.
It also makes the center of the union of 4 cities formed in the Black Sea. The alliance gradually gains strength, and their son opposes Amastris to become so powerful, and they decide to kill him. Amastris was strangled by his sons in 284 BC. The 3rd ex-wife of Amastris, Macedonian General Lysimachus, hears this and assassinates Amastris' sons on the pretext of revenge for the queen, mainly because it suits her own political interests.
This is how the story of Queen Amastris happened
