Raphael, one of the "Three Greats" from the High Renaissance masters, alongside Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, painted the School of Athens in 1509. This iconic painting has been alive for centuries and is currently one of the most revered Renaissance paintings. It was completed between 1508 and 1511.

The School of Athens painting was part of the artworks commissioned by Pope Julius II when Raphael moved to Rome. It is believed that the Italian architect Donato Bramante recommended Raphael to the Pope while working on architectural plans for the redesign of St. Peter's Basilica (c. 1506-1626). This was the same period when Michelangelo was painting the ceilings of the Sistine Chapel for the Pope.

Raphael created a kind of gathering of scholars for Pope Julius II's private chambers, known as the Room of the Segnatura, which was originally intended to house the church court. It was intended to be filled with portraits of both Christian and pagan thinkers from ancient times. Beyond mere homage, the School of Athens transcends its purpose. Like Leonardo's Last Supper, the architectural setting, thought to be inspired by Donato Bramante's early Christian basilica vision for St. Peter's, creates a dramatic vista when visitors look up at the ceiling of the Room of the Segnatura.

At the center of the School of Athens, there is a dynamic duo of Aristotle, supporting a copy of Ethics, and Plato, bald and pointing to the heavens, holding a copy of Timaeus. Pythagoras sits below, drawing geometry, Diogenes leans on a step, and a marble bench serves as a passive writing surface for the pessimistic Heraclitus, believed to be a portrait of Michelangelo, who was working on the Sistine ceiling at the time. Ptolemy stands out with his celestial spheres. Euclid patiently teaches future generations. The overall theme of the painting and the entire room is the synthesis and celebration of worldly (Greek) and spiritual (Christian) thought.

The School of Athens painting, situated in the main room it depicts, the Room of the Segnatura, symbolizes Philosophy, one of the disciplines of Humanities or human knowledge that the room aimed to represent. The other three paintings symbolize "Poetry," "Justice," and "Theology." In the School of Athens, we see various ancient philosophers and scholars engaged in discussion, contemplation, and calculation. The two central figures include the prominent ancient philosophers Plato and Aristotle.

Raphael's School of Athens is located in the Vatican's Apostolic Palace in Rome, Italy. It was painted in the Stanza della Segnatura, formerly the Pope's library and study. The other rooms were Sala di Costantino (Hall of Constantine), Stanza di Eliodoro (Room of Heliodorus), and Stanza dell'Incendio del Borgo (Room of the Fire in the Borgo).
