Pablo Picasso, The Weeping Woman

The Weeping Woman series is considered a thematic continuation of the tragedy depicted in Picasso's epic painting Guernica. By focusing on the image of a crying woman, the artist no longer directly portrays the effects of the Spanish Civil War, but rather he refers to a singular image of universal suffering.

Picasso's response to us imagining this woman's chided face, her dark eyes, was part of seeing newspaper photographs about the bombing of Guernica on behalf of Franco by the Luftwaffe in the Spanish Civil War on April 26, 1937. The Weeping Woman (1937) was the end of Picasso's series of paintings, prints, and drawings made for protest. There are very personal, Spanish sources. In May 1937, Picasso's mother wrote to him from Barcelona that the smoke coming out of the city burning during the war was causing her eyes to water. The Weeping Virgin Mater Dolorosa is a traditional image in Spanish art, and is often represented in bright baroque statues with glass tears, like the very strong one flowing towards this woman's right ear. Picasso's artist father made one for the family home.

The model for the painting, even the whole series, was Dora Maar, who was working as a professional photographer when she met Picasso in 1936; Picasso was the only photographer allowed to document the successive stages of Guernica while he was painting it in 1937.

Dora Maar was Picasso's lover from 1936 to 1944. During their relationship, Picasso painted her in a variety of guises, some realistic, some benign, some tortured or threatening. Picasso's statement:

"For me, she is the weeping woman. For years I have painted her in tortured forms, not with sadism, nor with pleasure; just obeying a vision that forced me. This was not a superficial truth but a deep one... Dora was always a weeping woman for me....And this is important, because women are machines of suffering."
