Maurits Cornelis Escher

Maurits Cornelis Escher

Dutch artist Maurits Cornelis Escher, who lived between 1898 and 1972, was an illustrator and artist known for his elaborate lithographs, woodblocks and mezzotint printing techniques, exploring resonant patterns, perception, space and transformation through his innovative work.
Escher had a talent for visualizing different spatial patterns from childhood and attended Haarlem's School of Architectural and Decorative Arts, although he wasn't good at most of his earlier work. Escher decided to take up graphic arts under the advice of his mentor, Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita. His earlier work included innovative portraits of nudes and interconnected "Eight Heads" (1922), shot in woodcuts, linoleum cuts, and lithographs.
Escher traveled to the Mediterranean in the early 1920s and was deeply impressed by the wonders of the Moor-designed Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain. He met Jetta Umiker in 1923; They married the following year and had three children.
Escher developed a style of print and engraving that played prominently with direction and space. Influenced by Moorish designs in Spain, works such as "Day and Night" featured interlocking forms and transformations on a surreal canvas.

Maurits Cornelis Escher's Style

Escher, who set up a home with his family in Rome, surprisingly played with perspective, orientation and shadow, working on etchings and prints that captured natural landscapes and architecture. He also created more human-oriented works, including a 1925 image of his wife and several self-portraits such as "Hand With Reflecting Sphere" in 1935.
With the rise of fascism in Italy, Escher and his family moved to Switzerland in 1935, but soon embarked on a cruise to Spain, returned to the Alhambra Palace and also visited La Mezquita ("The Mosque") in Cordoba. . Escher was inspired by the intricate designs of structures and focused her work on tessellation and repetitive patterns, where often overlapping, interlocking images morph into something else, as seen in the "Metamorphosis" and "Development" series.
Escher and his family had moved to Belgium in 1937, but with the invasion of Nazi forces they went to the Netherlands in 1941. Here, too, glamorous dreams continued to create works of fiction. Escher, in addition to being an international artist who was ultimately lauded for exhibitions, has been embraced by mathematicians and scientists, extensively researched, many of his definitive outputs have embodied or explored concepts around geometry, logic, space and infinity.
