Marbling (Ebru): The Timeless Art on Water

Marbling, also known as Ebru, is a mesmerizing art form that involves creating colorful patterns by sprinkling and brushing pigments on the surface of water, which is then transferred to paper or other absorbent surfaces. This technique is not only visual but deeply meditative, reflecting a harmony between movement, color, and balance. Originating from Central Asia and refined in the Ottoman Empire, Ebru has become one of the most cherished traditional arts in Turkish culture.

The marbling process begins with a tray filled with water thickened with carrageenan or tragacanth, creating a viscous surface ideal for floating paints. Natural pigments mixed with ox-gall are delicately dropped onto the water surface. Artists use special brushes made from horsehair and rosewood to manipulate the floating colors, forming intricate patterns such as flowers, feathers, and spirals. Once the design is complete, it is carefully laid onto a sheet of paper, capturing the fluid design in a permanent form.

Historically, Ebru dates back to the 15th century and was used to decorate the backgrounds of calligraphy works or as endpapers in bookbinding. It gained popularity during the Ottoman era, with artists like Hatip Mehmed Efendi and Mustafa Düzgünman becoming iconic figures in marbling history. Ebru was considered a spiritual practice by many, closely tied to patience, discipline, and the impermanence of beauty.

Modern Ebru has evolved beyond traditional patterns to embrace abstract and contemporary styles. Artists today explore new materials and formats, including fabric and canvas, pushing the boundaries of the medium while staying true to its contemplative essence.
