Jan van Eyck
Flemish painter Jan van Eyck, thought to have lived between 1390 and 1441, is considered the founder of the Early Renaissance style in the Renaissance of the northern region of Europe and one of the earliest Flemish oil painters.
Even hundreds of years after his time, he was called the "King of Painters" by the people due to the delicateness and brilliance of the oil painting technique he used in his paintings. Jan van Eyck painted and restored paintings in the palace of Duke Johann of Bavaria in The Hague until 1425. After that, he was commissioned not only as an artist, but also by the Duke in various diplomatic missions. Since 1430, van Eyck lived and worked in Bruges as a painter in the palace and in the city.
Van Eyck's most famous and most controversial work is one of his early works, the Ghent altarpiece (1432), a polyptych of twenty panels in the Church of St. Bavo, Ghent.
Jan van Eyck Style
He painted both secular and religious subjects, including single-panel religious figures and bespoke portraits. His works include single panels, diptychs, triptychs and polyptych panels. In the frame is an incomplete inscription in Latin that identifies the artists of the work as Hubert and Jan van Eyck. The general interpretation is that Hubert van Eyck (d. 18 September 1426) was Jan's brother and was the painter himself who started the altar. Another interpretation is that Hubert was neither Jan's brother nor a painter, but a sculptor who carved an elaborate frame for the altar. Because of this discussion, the somewhat different attribution of panels in scale and even style, according to the arguments of academics studying the problem, has been differentiated.
Van Eyck altarpieces, Van Eyck worked for John of Bavaria and the earl of Hainaut-Holland (1422-24) in two courts, and subsequently received a prestigious appointment with Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy (1425-41). Working at the court gave him an unusual social status for a painter as well as artistic independence from the painters' guild of Bruges, where he settled in 1431.
Despite his individual reputation, Van Eyck did not achieve his success alone; As was customary, he employed workshop assistants who made exact copies, variations and pastiches of his completed paintings. Such work has undoubtedly helped to ensure strong demand for his work in the open market, while also contributing to the recognition of his name throughout Europe.
