Gustav Klimt, Judith and the Head of Holofernes, 1901, Canvas Print, Oil Painting Replica and High Resolution Image Download

Judith was a Biblical heroine who seduced and then decapitated General Holofernes to save her hometown Bethulia from destruction by the Assyrian army. As an example of virtue overcoming evil, the subject was quite popular among the Old Masters, a typical example being Caravaggio's Judith Beheading Holofernes. However, this painting is not a timeless allegory, as Judith and the Head of Holofernes is depicted as a beauty of Viennese society. The model was Adele Bloch-Bauer and if we compare it with her portrait, it is easy to see the similarity in their faces. There appear to be two main types of Klimt women. The first one was this dark-haired woman with angular features as seen in Judith and the Head of Holofernes. The other favorite was the fleshy, Rubenesque beauty depicted in Danae. Judith's sensuality and her orgasmic expression while lifting Holofernes' head shocked Vienna. The Viennese could not see how this brazen fatal woman, who obviously enjoyed her actions, risked her virtue to save their city as a devout Jewish widow. A much more acceptable solution was to insist that despite the title on the frame, this was a painting of the murderous Salome and it was erroneously known as 'Salome' for a long time.

In a sense, Judith's head was severed. The heavy gold choker she is wearing, fashionable in Vienna in the early twentieth century, brutally separates her head from her body. Her clothes half conceal, half reveal her body. The stylized gold strip at the bottom of the painting appears to be the hem of her garment but then cuts across her stomach like a straight belt. The painting was purchased almost contemporaneously by Ferdinand Hodler (1853 - 1918), a highly admired painter, who was almost Klimt's Swiss contemporary.
