Edvard Munch, Vampire

Love and Pain is a painting from 1895 by Edvard Munch; it's also named as Vampire, though not by Munch himself. The painting depicts a woman embracing a man, and the woman appears to be either kissing or biting the man's neck. Munch painted six different versions of the same subject between 1893 and 1895. Three versions are in the collection of the Munch Museum in Oslo, one belongs to the Gothenburg Art Museum, one is owned by a private collector, and the last work has not been accounted for. Munch painted a few additional versions and derivatives of the work later in his career.

The painting shows a woman with long flame-red hair kissing a man on the neck as they embrace. Although some have seen "a man locked in the tormented embrace of a vampire - her red hair melting into his soft bare skin", Munch himself always insisted that it portrayed nothing more than "just a woman kissing a man on the neck".

The name Vampire was first given to the painting by Munch's friend, the critic Stanisław Przybyszewski. Przybyszewski saw the painting at an exhibition and described it as "a man who has become submissive and has a vampire biting his neck".

A version of the painting was stolen from the Munch Museum on February 23, 1988. The painting was recovered the same year when the thief contacted the police.

In 2008, at a Sotheby's auction, the 1894 version of the painting sold for $38.2 million (£24.3 million), setting a world record at auction for a Munch painting.

In 1895, Munch created an engraving with a very similar theme and composition, known as Vampyr II.

Between 1916 and 1918, Munch reused the composition in a different setting for two paintings called Vampire in the Forest and Vampire, which are now in the collection of the Munch Museum.
