Zhang Daqian, who lived from 1899 to 1983, was born into an artistic family in the Chinese province of Sichuan. The turmoil of the following decades provided the young artist with both challenges and opportunities - he was able to see and experience many things around the world, but spent the second half of his life unable to return to his homeland. Born into an artistic family, Zhang Daqian was first taught painting by his mother and older siblings. He continued to copy as many masterpieces as he saw and was particularly influenced by the work of individual masters Shitao and Bada Shanren. Zhang Daqian spent two years studying Buddhist murals in Dunhuang, which proved to be a crucial experience in its development. His eagerness to see and study the masterpieces of the past naturally led Zhang Daqian to become an influential expert and an important collector.
Daqian Zhang Painting Technique, Style
Zhang Daqian's works stand out for the many painting styles he has mastered, from meticulous and detailed portraits to bold and expressive inked landscapes. While he was quite innovative in developing his own unique style, he remained firmly rooted in the Chinese tradition of his art. In 1917, Chang moved to Kyoto, Japan, to learn textile dyeing techniques. He then returned to Shanghai in 1919 and had a successful career selling his paintings.
Zhang Daqian left the country in 1949 due to the political climate of China, and then moved to Argentina in 1952, two years later in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and in 1960, California. In the late 1950s, his weakening eyesight led him to develop the pocai style, combining abstract expressionism with traditional Chinese painting styles. He mentored painter Minol Araki in the 1970s.
It may not be easy to attribute works to Chang, as Zhang Daqian's style is so diverse. He not only created his own work, but also imitated the original works of other artists. And also some painters imitated his works.
