Wassily Kandinsky, Composition 8
Composition VIII, produced in 1923 by Russian artist Vassily Kandinsky, is an oil painting on canvas created in an Abstract style. It is a logical development of the painter's creative genius and reflects to some extent the influence of Suprematism and Constructivism that Kandinsky absorbed in Russia and at the Bauhaus.
The painting consists of various geometric shapes, colors, straight and curved lines against a creamy background that blends into pale blue areas at certain points. The use of circles, grids, rectangles, semicircles, triangles, and other mathematical forms in the artwork remains consistent with the painter's belief in the mystical qualities of geometric shapes, while the chosen colors are selected for their emotional impact.
In 1926, Kandinsky published his most significant theoretical work, "Point and Line to Plane." Naturally, many of the painter's canvases from this period are practical expressions of his theoretical ideals. However, this is not a literal application but rather an intuitive and poetic interpretation. Kandinsky was consistent and methodical as a writer, but when working with figures and colors on the canvas, he became passionate and impulsive. And, of course, he hoped the viewer would perceive his work emotionally. Having been fascinated by colors since childhood and believing they possessed transcendent qualities, Kandinsky sought to explore the mutual relationship between sound and color, similar to a musician composing a song.
Kandinsky aimed to formulate an abstract language that would evoke strong emotions in the viewer, much like in music. He wrote, "The form itself, even though entirely abstract... has its own inner sound." Kandinsky was searching for a universal harmony law that should be at the center of every creation in the visual arts, and this mystical belief was reinforced by the painter's compelling inner force.
Composition VIII was one of the first paintings purchased by Solomon R. Guggenheim. In 1930, Guggenheim visited the Bauhaus, where he acquired several of Kandinsky's artworks. This marked the beginning of a vast collection that is now displayed at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
