Raphael (Raffaello di Sanzio)

Italian Renaissance painter who lived from 1483 to 1520. His real name is Raffaello Sanzio. It is also known as "l'urbinate" by Italians. This is because urbinate means one from urbino, born in urbino in Italian.
His work is appreciated for the clarity of shapes, the richness of his works, and his visual achievements in the expression of neoplatonic (Plato's ideas about man) ideas of human grandeur. Along with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, he is considered one of the three great masters of this period.

Raphael's Artistic Style

Serenity in his theological, philosophical and lyrical paintings; harmony in colors; clarity and a whole expression prevail in matters. One of Raphael's works is to prepare wall coverings with the ornaments he puts on the fabric. Ten large wall decoration covers that he prepared between 1513 and 1521 were used in the Sistine Church.

The styles of Melozzo da Forlì, Piero della Francesca and, most of all, Pietro Perugino are seen in Raphael's works in Urbino. In particular, Perugino's influence is seen in the Coronation of the Virgin, which he completed in 1503. The biggest reason for this is that before going to Florence, he studied in Perugia under Pietro Perugino. Under this influence of Perugino, in 1504, the last painting he painted was the Marriage of the Virgin.

Raphael's Works

Raphael saw the Renaissance movements as a precocious, resourceful youth, and began with the creation of Eve and the Trinite paintings, which he painted at the age of sixteen.

The vast majority of his work is in the Vatican Palace, the frescoed Raphael room, which is his greatest work in his career. His best-known work is The School of Athens in the Vatican Stanza della Sefnatura.

 When Raphael went to Florence, he found himself in the Renaissance. Influenced by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, he added innovations to his art. The paintings he painted in Florence until 1508 are Sistine Madonne, La Belle Jandinière, Madonna of the Chair and Entombmeut. Raphael, Pope II in Rome. Worked for Julius. When he came to Rome, Michelangelo was drawing the decoration of the Sistine Church, which Julius had built. Raphael first decorated the Pope's library here.
