Louis Wain

  Louis Wain was born on August 5, 1860, in Clerkenwell, London, as the first of six children in his family. Despite being a man of modest means, Wain was educated at the West London School of Art, where he initially trained as a teacher. His teaching career, however, was short-lived, as he quickly transitioned into a full-time career as an illustrator and artist, primarily contributing to periodicals like the Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News and The Illustrated London News.

Louis Wain’s life took a pivotal turn after his marriage to Emily Richardson in 1883, which was marked by a personal tragedy when Emily died of breast cancer just three years later. During her illness, to entertain her, Wain began drawing their pet cat, Peter, which marked the beginning of his lifelong fascination with feline subjects. His drawings of cats featured anthropomorphic qualities, portraying them wearing clothes, walking upright, and engaging in human activities. These whimsical and endearing illustrations won the hearts of the British public, and Wain quickly became a popular figure in the world of art and illustration.

Wain’s artistic style was distinctive, characterized by its vibrant use of color and dynamic, exaggerated forms. His illustrations often depicted cats in a range of contexts, from playing musical instruments to attending tea parties, encapsulating a unique blend of humor and fantasy that appealed to both adults and children. His work contributed significantly to the shift in public perception of cats from mere mousers to cherished companions.

Despite his professional success, Wain faced personal challenges, particularly concerning his mental health. In the 1920s, his behavior became increasingly erratic, and in 1924, he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and admitted to a mental hospital. His condition influenced his artistic output, leading to a period of work that was markedly more abstract and surreal. The themes in his artwork from this period reflected a deeper dive into the chaos and fragmentation of his mental state.

Louis Wain spent the last 15 years of his life in mental institutions, where he continued to draw and paint. Despite his circumstances, he remained productive and engaged with his art. He passed away on July 4, 1939, in Napsbury Hospital near St Albans, Hertfordshire.
